When we think of infections there are pictures of microbes associated with common infections appearing in our mind. Bacterial, viral, helminth, protozoan or fungi borne infections are there. The bacterial infections out of which are mostly associated with immunocompromised patients. Most of these infections remained asymptomatic for a shorter duration or may show certain features like acid reflux, fever, vomiting etc. which are ignored in general. These bacterial infections mostly get resistant to antibiotics, and one of such bacteria borne infections is Klebsiella pneumonia. In this article we are going to discuss Klebsiella Pneumonia, its clinical manifestations, causes and mode of transmission along with its best Ayurvedic treatment.
Klebsiella pneumonia is the infection caused by a rod shaped, non-motile, gram-negative enteric bacterium known as Klebsiella pneumoniae, this bacterium penetrates the intestinal barrier, leading to various diseases and infections. This bacterium belongs to the enterobacteriaceae family and is a healthy anaerobic bacteria when present in the gut which ferments the lactose. But when this bacteria is dislocated from its normal place, it can cause various illness and symptoms. The various infections caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae include pneumonia in lungs, bloodstream infections in blood, and urinary tract infections when traveling to the urinary system, meningitis when it goes to the brain. Here, we are more focused on the pneumonia associated with the Klebsiella pneumoniae infection.
Sign And Symptoms
The clinical features of Klebsiella pneumoniae are shown when the bacterium K. pneumoniae enters the respiratory tract. The manifestation of this pneumonia includes the fever with chills, coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain and yellowish or blood mixed mucus in the expectorations. This condition may be found associated with nausea, vomiting, sleeping disorders, headaches, sudden weight loss and signs of Urinary tract infections that include increased frequency and urgency to urinate, oliguria and burning and pain while urinating.
Klebsiella pneumoniae, the causative organism of the disease, has ubiquitous nature which resides in two common habitats i.e. environment and as a sporophyte in humans. Intestines, in normal conditions, are considered as the main reservoir of this bacterium, but the mucosal epithelial lining of the intestines creates a barrier of infections and pathogens. But through paracellular and intracellular routes these microbes penetrate intestinal epithelium, and cause various manifestations in the part they spread. The most prone people for these infections include the people with long term antibiotic use or having a weakened immune system due to an underlying cause. Other risk factor for the disease include increasing age, being hospitalized, using a ventilator or intravenous catheter, history of surgery, solid-organ transplantations, wound, alcoholism, patients of COPD, diabetes, lung diseases, kidney failure, cancer or the patient was on immunosuppressant drugs, dialysis, and chemotherapy.
Mode of Transmission
The infection of this bacterium mostly spread from the affected one to the healthy person by air transmission or contaminated hands of the affected person. Most of the cases, this infection is hospital acquired and the patients exposed to these pathogens while they are on vein catheters or on ventilators.
The infection of this bacterium is diagnosed by the features and clinical evaluation of the patient, by evaluating the fluid samples for the detection of bacteria. These fluids include blood, urine mucus or spinal fluid (in meningitis). The imaging tests such as chest X-ray are done for examining the lungs.
In Ayurveda, the pneumonic condition created by Klebsiella pneumoniae, is correlated with heen pitta madhya vata kapholavan sannipataj jwar which means the infective febrile condition arises as a result of vitiation of tridosha in a specific manner. This disease can occur in any age but commonly affects the age group of 15-40 years people.
Acharya Madhava had mentioned the specific features of the disease and termed it as shawshank jwar. The manifestations given by Acharya are as-
