This guide is designed to help enlighten men on the best features to look for when buying water shoes, why she should wear them, and how to choose the right pair for any of her water sport needs

What Are Water Shoes?

Before going further, it might be helpful to define exactly what a water shoe is. Water shoes are a type of footwear that is usually used for water sports activities in which the feet are likely to become wet such as Wakeboarding. To put it simply, a water shoe is a specialized form of footwear that provides outstanding traction and foot/toe protection for individuals engaged in active water sports.

Water shoes help protect the athlete from slipping when on water sports equipment such as a boat or Wakeboard. Water shoes are also designed and made to protect the athlete's feet from debris, rocks and shells. They are mesh like with a hard sole to prevent cuts to the foot. The outer sole is used to prevent the athlete's foot from getting abrasions and cuts when walking on wet, rocky surroundings. Water shoes protect feet that will be in sharp rocky floors water. Due to the infestation of sharp-edged mussels, in many areas, water shoes have become a necessity. Water shoes or aquatic shoes are designed for the following purposes.

Water shoes are generally made to provide traction for the user. This feature can be particularly important in water with slippery surfaces. The soles of water shoes are sufficiently textured to grab slippery surfaces.

Quality water shoes usually have a stretchy upper portion that will support the foot without constricting it. If the water shoes are made from lightweight materials they will tend to quickly dry, allowing for more comfort, even if the shoes are worn for a long period of time.

Sturdy Soles

Water shoes are useful for walking on rocky beaches, streams or river beds. Water shoes are also helpful for protecting feet from the pool bottoms rough surfaces. On an extended exposure to these surfaces, bare feet can become irritated, raw and sore. Water shoes with sturdy soles will protect the bottoms of feet from soreness and injury.

Another advantage of water shoes is the extra layer of warmth that the upper fabric can provide to wet feet. This is especially true in situations where it is breezy and where feet may easily cramp from the cold.

Water shoes are available at many online stores or websites, fitness stores, and sporting goods stores. They generally range in price from $25 for basic shoes to $75 for name-brand shoes with special features and designs.

When spending a lot of time on the water, it’s a sure fact that your feet will get wet, regular shoes, no matter the brand or quality will get wet in faster. This will not only significantly shorten the lifespan of your shoes, but will also be harmful to your feet. However, water shoes are specifically designed for these activities. They do not absorb nor enclose the water, rather they allow free flow. By not absorbing the moisture, they keep your feet safe from moisture damage.

Why Men Need Water Shoes?

There are many men who have had no problem wearing sandals in the water, and they might be thinking what the heck do they need water shoes for men. The main reason men need water shoes are for safety and protection. Sandals and other types of summer shoes have openings which leave parts of a foot vulnerable to rocks, glass, or debris that may be in the water. When people or athletes step into the water, they do not see the bottom and may never know where their foot may land; thus, it’s always important to cover the entire foot. Men water shoes have thick soles that cover the entire foot giving added safety and protection to the wearer.

Another reason to wear water shoes for men is because they keep the person's feet warm. When a person's feet get cold, his whole body easily becomes cold, which may hinder the athletic performance. Water shoes are designed and constructed to keep the athlete's feet warm while they are in the water. Their upper mesh and thick sole design balance the temperature of the person's foot. Hence, they help to keep the man's feet warmer in and out of the water making her more comfortable.

Benefits of Best Men’s Water Shoes

The best men’s water shoe is regarded as the Columbia Drainmaker III water Shoes for many reasons. These consist of the following:

Excellent Traction: It provides traction similar to what is found on quality hiking shoes and hiking boots. Also, their design allows for excellent traction on wet, hard, and slippery surfaces typically found along lakes and rivers, such as rocks.Because the Columbia water shoes for men are specifically meant to be used in water, its manufacturer recognizes the high possibility and risk of slippery footing and the importance of a grippy sole.

Front Toe Protection: Its "closed toe" design provides protection to the toes, preventing stubbed toes, scrapes, and ripped-off the toenails. This Columbia water shoes for men are generally designed for more active pursuits. If you have ever walked on a rocky lake bed or floated through turbulent whitewater after falling out of your boat, you should be vested with the danger posed to feed in the water.  It protects your feet from the abrasions, bumps, and spikes of the unfriendly, sharped-edges, debris filled underwater world.

No More Squishy Feet: Unlike sneakers, Columbia water shoes for men don't hold and absorb water. They quickly drain water nearly as fast as a sandal does. And their design and construction prevents the fabric from absorbing water.

Work Well Out of the Water: The excellent traction and design allows them to work well out of the water. Columbia men’s water shoes can easily convert into a limited version of a "hiking shoe." Just be sure to wear a well-padded hiking sock and to dry the foot completely.

Top of Foot Protection: The While styles vary from brand to brand, theMen Columbia Drainmaker III water shoes provides a better top-of-foot protection than a sandal. This protection comes in very handy to preventing bloody bruises and scrapes due to items being dropped on the foot. The protection is also helpful for those who need to walk through varied terrain on land.

Quick drying. The purpose of the Columbia water shoes for men is not to keep your feet dry while in the water. You can keep dry feet in a number of ways. By wearing sealed rubber boots, Gore-Tex socks, or staying at home, but water shoes are more durable, less expensive, and more fun option.

Manufacturers Desired: In search of a “one shoe to rule them all” type of shoe, Columbia have blurred the line between land sports and water sports. It would be better to call them amphibious shoes rather than water shoes, because they’re good on water, on land, and in the air. Depending on the model you get, they may equally be good at home, on a sailboat destined, on an overnight river trip, or on a rainy walk through the city.

Water shoes also have some limitations and drawbacks like every other type of footwear.

More Difficult to Get In/Out Compared to Sandals: Being a closed design, Columbia water shoes for men aren't quite as simple as sandals to slip on/off your foot. But they aren't any more difficult to put on or take off than an athletic sneaker. Still, people who know they'll frequently be taken off their shoes during the course of a day might go for a water sandal.

More Expensive than Water Sandals: Due to their design and construction, Columbia water shoes for men are more expensive than most quality water sandals. And depending on design, style and size, the prices tend to vary between %12 and $60.

Not a True "Hiking Shoe": Although the Men Columbia Drainmaker III water shoes work well for short hiking, but they are no match to true "hiking shoe." Because of their need to quickly drain water and dry faster, water shoes lack the padding and other comfort built into quality hiking shoes. As such, it quickly becomes discomfort able when taking long hikes in water shoe. And while Columbia water shoes for men can be decent on land, they don’t provide the support or protection and comfort you would like on a long, multi-day hike.

Limited Choices in Styles/Colors: Columbia water shoes for men, due to their specialized nature, may not be a popular type of footwear. As such, there are only a few manufacturers who made them. This results in limited designs, styles and color choices when compared to other types of footwear.

On Hot and Cold Day:  On hot days when we don’t need the full-foot coverage that comes with shoes, sandals will be more breathable and, most likely, more comfortable than your Columbia water shoes. Also, on cold weather when you don’t want your feet to get wet, water shoes won’t provide that much insulation.

How to Choose the Best Water Shoe

There are many factors that make up the best water shoe. Lower quality shoes may have irregular or imperfect stitching and a flimsy feel. You may even feel the rough edges on the inside, as cheaper manufacturers always cut corners, thus leaving out pads to cushion hot spots.

The most important aspect of buying a water shoe is getting the right shoe for you and your activities. Below are some important features to look for in a shoe for hiking, fishing, and kayaking.

Hiking: Water shoes are a great choice for short hikes due to their breathability and quick drying properties. Always buy shoe that has a rugged sole and which provide much needed protection. If the water shoe has elastic in the heel, ensure that it won’t keep your foot in position on steep uphills, or stretch too loosely. Regular laces are better than a slip-on shoe with no lacing or elastic pull tab shoes. They provide better support while on irregular terrain. Remember that wet feet are more prone to blisters. A shoe that breathes well and fits your feet right off the bat, without needing to break it in, and will save you hours of pain later.

Fishing: If you will be standing on the shore or sitting in a boat, your water shoes don’t have to have fancy, wear just what’s comfortable. If you are standing in a boat, prioritize water shoes with tackier rubber on aggressive soles. When wading in a rocky river, go for traction and foot protection, and a lacing system that won’t let the shoe slip off. A water shoe with ample support is also a good idea.

Kayaking: For Flatwater kayaking or vacation, a comfortable, quick-drying shoe will work the magic while for whitewater kayaking, you’ll probably want a shoe that stays on in any situation and will provide the traction and protection you need for standing in rocky rivers.

Why You Need Water Shoes

If you think any shoe will be just fine in the water, think again. The right footwear is a must for any activity or sport as it helps you perform at your peak while providing the appropriate level of protection. If you’ve ever stepped on a sharp rock with bare feet or slipped on a rock wearing flip flops, your experience should have given you two key reasons why water shoes are important: traction and safety. Their flexible material, lightweight designs, and rugged outsoles are an ideal balance of protection and comfort. Also, if you’re big into boating, you’ll agree with me that most water shoes have non-marking soles. Here are some of the important reasons why we need water shoes.

Protection and Safety

Most water shoes have thick soles and cover the entire foot. These features are vital for protecting your feet from sharp objects (such as rocks and shells) and hot surfaces. Look for a style that has built-in toe shields to help prevent stubbed toes. This is particularly important when wading through water with unpredictable and rocky terrain, such as ocean floors and riverbeds.

Traction and Support

Water shoes comprised of specially designed tread for optimal traction on slippery surfaces, including decks, boat docks, and water equipment. Their thick rubber outsoles also allow for better grip on these wet surfaces.

While slip-on style shoes are great for beach wear and underwater use, they don’t offer the same ankle support as lace-up water shoes, which are more suitable for trekking through creek beds, trails, and streams.

Lightweight and Quick Drying

Water shoes, are designed to be worn on both dry surfaces and underwater. Their side outsoles help move water to the side when you make contact with the ground, making them great for traction. Non-water shoes on the other hand, often get heavy when waterlogged. This disrupts the smooth, fluid movements you’re looking for in underwater footwear and makes for added weight when you aren’t submerged.

Regular shoes also absorb and retain water because they aren’t made to drain like water shoes, so you’ll experience plenty of discomfort and squishiness once you do get out of the water. This is the most cause of blisters and potential unwanted smell (odor) and mold growth in your shoes. A best water shoes are made of well-ventilated fabrics and have multiple perforations and drainage points to help water drain from the shoe and prevent these nuisances.

Comfort and Warmth

Water shoes are made with a mesh material for enhanced breathability and flexibility, which helps keep feet warmth and comfortable. This also improved water flow when submerged and allows for better drainage when out of the water.

They also provide insulation, which help keep feet warm in cold water. This temperature regulating property is very important as poor circulation and coldness could affect safety and performance.

You might also consider a shoe with increased heel cushioning in the event that you don’t want your feet submerged for a long time. This is great for sailing, boating, and other activities that may have you on your feet a lot.

Water shoes are specifically designed to be durable despite constant immersion in water.

How to Care for Water Shoes

An unexpected shower or snowy commute can spell trouble for your favorite pair of kicks. Water shoes can be salvaged, however, if you dry them promptly and protect them against future encounters with water.

Suede and Leather

Caring for water shoes is a three-step process that tackles the water, gives the shoes a quick touch-up after they're dry and then creates a waterproof coating for added protection next time you wear them.

Drying Water Shoes

If the interiors of your shoes are damp, press a clean, dry cloth in the sole to soak up any excess water. Then, stuff your shoes with balled-up newspaper. This will soak up the remaining moisture and prevent odors. Allow the newspaper in for about an hour. If it water when you pull it out, replace the newspaper with another few sheets. Repeat the process until the newspaper comes out mostly dry.

During this process, lay the shoes on their sides so the soles can also dry.

Important to note: The sooner you dry your shoes, the better. Keeping your feet in damp shoes won't just be uncomfortable, but may result in serious stinky shoes. Once you get out of the water, slip those shoes off and start soaking up as much water as you can.

Never dry your shoes in front of direct heat, such as a space heater or vent. Heat can ruin some shoes. Leather, for example, might crack.

How to Get Odors Out of Water Shoes

Men water shoes as well as water shoes in general get stinky quickly, as they are synthetic, most are made of rubber and neoprene and don’t breathe like natural materials. This odor is caused by microorganisms, such as fungus and bacteria, that thrive in the warm and moist environment of the shoe. The unwanted smell (odor) in these shoes is most common if you wear them for long periods of time, or if you do not clean and dry them quickly after wearing them. Getting odor out of water shoes (shoes in general) involves both cleaning and deodorizing.

This cleaning and deodorizing process can be done as follows:

Loosen rubber fasteners on the water shoes (if applicable) and place the shoes in a clean sink. Fill the sink with warm water and add a teaspoon (tsp) of soap (shampoo, dish soap, or hand soap).

Add a half cup of baking soda to the water. Soak a sponge and sprinkle a little more of baking soda directly on the sponge.

Scrub the outside and the inside of the water shoes with the soaked sponge. Leave the shoes to soak in the water, after you’ve scrubbed them, for about half an hour.

Open the sink and let the water drain out. Rinse the shoes completely with warm water.

Dry the inner and outer surfaces of the water shoes with a towel.

Smell the shoes, if you still get odor, place a few tsp. of baking soda in each shoe and leave it overnight. Then rinse and dry the shoes the following morning.

To prevent odor, always wash your water shoes after each used. This will prevent the growth of the odor-causing fungus and bacteria. If you don’t have time to wash them, use baking soda, sprinkled liberally inside the shoe to absorb odors. You can also use sachet or an activated charcoal disk, left inside shoes overnight, as an additional odor preventative technique.

You Might Want a Water Shoe If...

Overall, water shoes are very important in the function. There are many activities that invariably need the incorporation of a good quality water shoe to provide the much needed safety and protection. These activities may include (but not limited to):

River Rafting Company Owners: You want to inflict pain on your guests when they walk on rocks along and in the river, thus allowing for the sale of photos with interesting facial expressions at the end of the float trip.

Swimming at the beach: Water shoes are perfect to keep the foot warm while swimming in colder water. Also, they are the perfect shoes to wear while swimming in any water where there’s the possibility of stepping on something "unpleasant" while swimming or wading. The sole of the water shoe is thin as it might be to prevent pebbles, small bits of rubbish and small shards of glass from slicing into the skin of the feet.

Insulating Layer: You may need an insulating layer to keep the feet warm while taking floats in colder water, especially if you don’t want to use a neoprene bootie in conjunction with a water sandal instead.

You have your primary shoes with you while out on the water. You may just need a cheap pair of water shoes for being "out on the water" and have a second pair of easily accessible shoes of some kind to wear when not in the boat.

Smooth Put In/Take Out Spots with No Portages or Hiking: You won’t be doing any portaging or need to walk in/along the banks of the river. A good example of this usage is sea kayakers, or lake paddlers who put in/take out at the same spot. Sea kayakers often use water shoes, since they’ll put in and take out their kayaks at piers/boat ramps and generally only leave their boats to walk along the beach and other sandy areas.

How to Get the Best Men’s Water Shoes

When buying water shoes, it’s best to know what to look for in order to get the best out of your investment. Without any regard to the manufacturers, it’s best to go for water shoes which have the following features:

Get a Shoe with a Toe Guard

It’s important to buy water shoes that have a toe guard. Toe guards are generally a standard feature in any water shoe. They make the water shoe different than any other summer shoe. Though toe guards are common, there are various manufacturers who do not offer them.

Look for a Shoe with Thick Soles

When looking for water shoes, it’s always better to invest in those with a thick sole so that the foot stays protected no matter where it lands. The thicker the sole, the more durable and protective it is against sharp rocks or other sharp items on the water bed. Thicker soles also have better traction control to prevent the wearer from slipping and falling while getting in or out of any kind of water equipment.

Go for Water Shoes Made from Quality Materials

Getting water shoes made of quality materials is also a better investment. Good quality materials should be comfortable material that covers all of the foot. The material should be able to dry quickly as well as balance the temperature of the wearer's foot, allowing the person to stay comfortable and warm. Get water shoes that offer temperature balance, durability, comfort, and quick drying material.

Know the Shoe Size

If you are trying to get a shoe and you are unsure which shoe size to purchase, you can follow these steps to determine what size shoe to get:

Step 1: Draw a vertical line, longer than one's foot, on a piece of white paper.

Step 2: Lay this paper on the floor or solid surface. Stand on the line so that your heel and longest toe are centered on the line.

Step 3: Place a horizontal mark on the line at the top of the big toe and at the back of the heel.

Step 4: Repeat steps one through three with the other foot.

Step 5: Measure the distance (in centimeters) between the two marks with a ruler.

Step 6: Use the larger of the two measurements to find the correct shoe size on the conversion chart. (See chart below)

Comparing the Benefits of the Different Types of Water Shoes

Boat Shoes: These shoes work great if you have a fancy or a yacht, fishing boat and won't be clambering on and off slippery shore rocks. However, if you plan on kayaking, fishing or rafting from shore or from a boat that requires you to enter the water, leave your boat shoes in the car. Boat shoes are basically designed and constructed from quick drying leather moccasins. They don't offer the true quick drying that is characterized by good quality water sandal and shoe. Additionally, they take a bit more time to drain completely. Boat shoes can get wet, but are not well constructed to withstand continuous submersion such as what happens when getting in/out of a raft.

Water Sandals: They are designed to be quick drying and ideal for summer use. Water drains freely and are more comfortable while out on the water than water shoes. They offer limited safety and protection to the foot. They lack foot protection on both the top and front of the sandal. Thus, some level of care is needed when walking in slippery places to prevent nasty toe and toenail injuries. A few toenails have been ripped up by falls while wearing sandals. Despite the limited foot safety and protection, water sandals are still the most popular water footwear type during the warmer months.

Water Shoes: They consist of a mixture of both the water sandal and a more normal shoe. Water shoes come in many different styles. Some look an exotic athletic shoe while others more closely resemble a sandal. Either way, water shoes provide better safety and protection to the foot. Moreover, water shoes are ideal if you plan on doing any hiking away from the water especially in rocky terrain. Due to their versatility, they are especially popular among canoeists and overnight floaters.

Wet Shoes: This is a niche footwear type, designed for "on the water" use. Wet shoes have very great traction within the raft, but lack of a thick sole makes doing any sort of walking out of the boat difficult and painful unless done on a smooth or sandy area, such as a parking lot, beach or grassy area. Lake and sea kayakers love the feel of wet shoes, since they keep feet warm during colder weather.
