In the present era with an excessive prevalence rate of diseases caused by microorganisms, we are making ourselves more prone toward infectious disorders. There are various types of infectious agents present in our surroundings; it could be bacteria, virus, fungi and protozoa. In this article, we are also going to study about ailment caused by bacteria known as ‘Klebsiella pneumoniae’. This organism is responsible for generating various pathologies in the human body, out of which urinary tract infection is a dominant one. Ailments caused by such invisible pathogens are known as “jivanu janya roga” in ayurveda. So let's start discussing how ayurveda deals with such types of disorders.
Urinary tract infection (UTI) means presence of infection in the urinary (renal) system of our body. Urinary tract is the drainage system of our body for removing urine. It includes a pair of kidney, pair of ureter, urinary bladder and urethra. Bacterium klebsiella pneumoniae normally lives in our digestive tract but when it gets migrated to other sites of our body it will produce infection. When it invades the urinary tract of our body, it carries a potency to produce infection in the urinary tract. Urinary tract infections are more common in females due to the presence of short stature of urethra (4.8-5.1 cm) in them. As per ayurveda we can correlate this with “mutra krich”.
Ayurvedic overview of Urinary tract infection
As per ayurveda mutra krich is a disorder of mutravaha srotas. Mutra Vaha srotas (urine forming channels) have their main seat in ‘basti’ (urinary bladder) and ‘vankshan’ (pubic region). There is disparity and vitiation of ‘kapha dosha’ (main energy) along with ‘med dhatu’ (fat tissue) in this leads to blockage of mutravaha srotas (urine containing channels) so the working process of excretory organs got hampered that will ultimately leads to formation of urinary tract infection.
These are the main causes (nidan as per ayurveda) that results in formation of an ailment.
Presence of klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria in the body is considered as the only root cause of this disease. Its spread can occurs due to various below listed factors:
Individuals suffering from serious maladies.
Person with weaker immunity.
Mishandling of medical and surgical equipment such as catheters, tubes, IV sets, syringes, needles etc.
Low hygiene of genital parts.
Use of infected washrooms.
As per Ayurveda (charaka chikitsa 26/32) the common cause of mutrkrichh are as follow
Strenuous physical exercises
Use of strong medications.
Over use of alcohol made up of rough substances.

As per Ayurveda -We use two treatment modalities in urinary tract infection due to klebsiella pneumoniae to sustainably manage the disease further growth. The first one is sanshodhan chikitsa (detoxification procedure) and san shaman chikitsa (alleviating treatment).
In Klebsiella urinary tract infection we need to use ‘mridu sanshodhan’ (mild detoxification procedures)
Snehana karma (oleation therapy) - Smoothing the body dosha’s by using herbal ghrit/oil.
Mridu svedan (gentle fomentation/sudation) - fomentation is done with herbs that possess mild action.
Mridu vaman - inducing emesis with mild potency herbs that are not very strong/harsh in action.
(b). San shaman chikitsa (alleviating treatment)
In this treatment modality we use the herbal medicines by oral route to balance vitiated doshas within the body itself.
